BMW 5 Series Hybrid
BMW just announced another hybrid. After the 7 Series and X6 Hybrids, it’s time for the 5 series to shine, this time at the Geneva Motor Show.
The ActiveHybrid 5 Series Concept is equipped with the newest version of BMW’s modular hybrid powertrain, which consists of the same engine that powers the 535i: a 3.0 litre,300 bhp, straight six petrol engine. But is also equipped with a specially-tuned stop start hybrid system. We can also find a battery powered 54 bhp electric motor between the engine and the eight speed automatic gearbox.
The switch between the petrol engine and the electric motor is done smoothly by using an automatic clutch. The car can be run on electricity alone for zero emissions or by combining both engines for maximum performance. Also the petrol engine works as a generator, giving electricity to the battery when braking and on the overrun.
Other features include an energy management system which allows the car to regenerate as much energy as possible. keeps the petrol engine off as much as possible and extends the electric range by 30%. Other details,specifications and price after the car will be unveiled at Geneva.
